In May, 1922, two decades after her retirement, RCDS founder and first head of school, Susan J. Life, reflected on her early career. In this letter to Miss F. Grace Best, the head of the Lower School at what was then the Rye Country Day Schools, Mrs. Life recalls the origination of the School’s motto, “Not for Self, but for Service.” It was during the Civil War that she developed the philosophy and coined the phrase, shortly before being called to lead the school in Rye that would become our beloved Rye Country Day.
